2019 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis [Artistic work]
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Between 2007-2017, the Swedish population increased its furniture consumption by as much as 40 percent. Increased consumption leads to greater climate impact as more energy and raw materials are needed. This project has investigated how emotional design can be used to extend the useful life of furniture and thus reduce furniture consumption. The study has addressed the problem of furniture consumption by using theories that create strong emotional bonds for people to want to keep their furniture for a longer period of time. The theoretical basis of the project consisted of research in circular and emotional design. The empirical collection took place through interviews and design experiments where participants were given the opportunity to evaluate different types of furniture solutions. The study concludes that users need greater opportunity for self-determination when it comes to furniture design. This has been exemplified in a modular furniture where fixed assemblies have been removed to achieve greater freedom in assembly.
