Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to study if demography affects the frequency of extractions of root filled teeth in women aged 45-54. A retrospective cohort study was conducted by analysing root fillings registered in Sweden 2009 and following extraction during the subsequent five years. Data was collected from SSIA and Statistics Sweden for women aged 45-54. Strategic groups were constructed by combining the demographic factors: civil status, educational level and country of birth, 8 groups were obtained. Pearson’s chi-2 and independent t-test were used for statistical analysis, the significance level was set to p<0.05. 20 928 women with at least one root filling was registered during 2009. The total frequency of extractions during the following five years was 10.0 %. Of the total cohort, differences were observed regarding civil status, where non-married women had a higher extraction frequency (p=0.014). The educational level and country of birth did not affect the frequency of extractions. No differences in extraction frequency were noted between the constructed groups; non-married women with higher education born in Sweden had the highest extraction frequency of 11.4 % and non-married women with higher education, born abroad had the lowest extraction frequency of 7.8 % (p=0.052). No differences regarding extraction frequency within five years after root filling were observed in the constructed groups based on civil status, educational level and country of birth in middle-aged women. This indicates that, in this regard, the dental care is equal and the dental law is fulfilled.
