Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a difference in the registration of xray findings related to caries and periodontitis when comparing dental students with dental hygienist students. Material and methods: 55 dental students and 19 dental hygienist students (74 participants in total) examined five vertical bitewing radiographs and were told to register all their findings. A comparison was made between the groups regarding the number of identified initial and manifest caries, marginal bone level, calculus, root fragment and furcation involvements. The radiographs in the study were selected after known criteria according to the golden standard (correct placement of sensor, correct area depicted (in both horizontal and vertical directions), correct exposure time, good contrast). In addition, the X-ray images in the study were evaluated by a group of four licensed dentists and three licensed dental hygienists, before the study was performed. Chi-2 tests were used to analyse the results. Result: The following findings were registered by participants in this study: Initial and manifest caries, marginal bone level, calculus, root fragment and furcation involvements. A statistically significant difference could be seen between dentistry students and dental hygienist students in terms of the quantity of registered initial and manifest caries. Dentistry students registered more caries. No significant difference was seen regarding the other registered findings. Conclusion: There is a difference between dental students and dental hygienist students in the registration of x-ray findings on bitewing images that is related to caries, however, there was no registration difference related to periodontal findings. Further studies should be conducted to identify the causes of this difference, the consequences and how it’s prevented.
