Abstract [en]

This paper aims to find alternative forms of masculine representation in media that are opposed to those that promote hegemonic masculinity by analysing Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy manga, Berserk. It aims to find out how Berserk represents different masculinities and how it navigates the relations between those different masculinities. This paper uses a multi-modal analysis that forms cross-modal cohesion by finding identity chains in order to map out how different masculinities, and the relations between those masculinities, are represented within the manga while using R.W. Connell’s Masculinities as a theoretical base. The goal here is to see if Berserk provides an alternative way to represent masculinity in media aimed at a male audience in a way that subverts hegemonic masculinity.
