Abstract [en]
What kinds of populist themes are used in Trumps speeches in the securitization of Illegal Immigration? Populist politics have brought great attention in the Western democracies. With the upsurge of populist actors such as Donald Trump with his populist agenda as selected as the President in 2016. Nonetheless, his speeches display a unique style which influenced his citizens to vote in favor to him. Therefore, this thesis focused on exploring what kinds of populist themes Donald trump uses in his speeches in the securitization of Illegal immigration. The paper aims to understand how populist discourses can be used as a way of influencing the audience and populist securitization can be used as a tool by the political actors in justifying their actions and policies.
To answer the research, question the paper used securitization theory to demonstrate how certain topics are being securitized by Donald Trump such as the Illegal Immigrant. After analyzing he paper identified that Trump populist discourses presents on the construction of positive self-presentation and the negative other presentation in which he present himself as a charismatic leader and the ‘other’ referred Illegal Immigrants and the corrupts elite who is criticized of allowing immigrants to flow in. Moreover, it was also evident that the securitization has thus become successful as Donald Trump imposed exceptional measures as promised in the construction of the border wall, travel bans for certain Muslim countries and legitimation to use force and implement extra ordinary measures on Illegal Immigrants.
