Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness among children and adolescents is increasing. The school nurse meets all the pupils who attend school and therefore has an opportunity to identify mental illness at an early stage. Research has shown that school nurses face difficulties and challenges in this task. Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate school nurses experiences of identifying mental illness among pupils in primary school. Method: A qualitative interview study was used as a method. Based on a semi-structured interview guide, eleven interviews were conducted with school nurses working at primary schools in two municipalities in Skåne county. All interviews were recorded, transcribed and then analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. Result: The result was presented through four categories as follows The impact of emotions on work, Lack of guidance, Importance of the relationship and Need for common responsibility. It emerged that work with mental illness evokes feelings of insecurity, fear, frustration, inadequacy and sense of responsibility. The relationship between student and school nurse was a prerequisite for being able to identify mental illness. The nurses considered that the work with identifying mental illness is important, but that there is no evidence-based methodology and a structured way of working. Conclusion: The study has shown that work with identifying mental illness among pupils in primary school is characterized by emotions. School nurses felt uncertainty about the handling of pupils with mental illness, and experienced frustration with the lack of consensus among school staff and collaboration with external actors.
