Abstract [sv]

This essay will focus on the child within research regarding physical activity in pre-school and school. This is one part of several components that will become my licentiate dissertation. Here I will in present the results of a bibliographic study of Swedish research in the intersection of pre-school and school; didactics; movement and PE and try to paint a picture of the place of the child within the research. The overview consists of dissertations (doctoral) and reports from the Government Offices of Sweden during the period of 1995-2008. Children and their roles as citizens is an important topic. To be a citizen you have to have a voice (Söderlind & Engwall 2005), which is heard. Attempts to give children voice, to create places for children to speak for them selves have been made. One example is Article 12 in the United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child which proclaim the right for the child to speak hers or his mind (Lee 2001). In general childhood is thought of as a time of innocence and play (Ariès 1982), full of physical activity as well as a period when a child should be free from responsibilities but also have not much say. Childhood is furthermore conceived as a period when the child should be shaped into good (future) citizens (Lee 2001). Is this a paradox?
