Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in International NGO-Led Development and Humanitarian Work
Malmö universitet, Fakulteten för kultur och samhälle (KS), Institutionen för konst, kultur och kommunikation (K3).
2024 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

This degree project examines the existing applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for international NGOs’ development and humanitarian initiatives. The study delves into the theoretical foundations of AI, ICT for Development (ICT4D), and Communications for Development (C4D), while also examining how new AI technologies are being presented in the communications published by international NGOs. The three NGOs reviewed and analyzed for this degree project are the International Rescue Committee, Save the Children, and Plan International.

The study aims to critically examine ethics around the use of AI for international development work, emphasizing the importance of the responsible technology use. This includes investigating the data privacy implications that come with using of AI. Furthermore, the project dives into how AI technologies may impact communications workers’ jobs within NGOs and the development sector. Research methodologies include a literature review, qualitative internet research, and case study analysis of two AI-driven projects, including a visual analysis.

The findings include that AI is becoming more of a central tool for international NGOs to engage in their ICT4D initiatives. Furthermore, NGOs can take a participatory approach when implementing AI-driven projects by involving local communities in the build and testing of AI products. The analysed NGOs are not emphasizing the AI-driven components of their projects in their communications campaigns and initiatives.

Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to the discourse on the role of AI in advancing international development and humanitarian efforts. It also offers insights and practical recommendations for NGOs on how to use AI responsibly for more effective communication strategies and successful implementation of AI.
