Visualisation of data and AI at the Emergency Department
2023 (engelsk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

This paper explores the role of data visualisation and data science in improving patients' experience in theEmergency Department (ED). Using the Design Science Research methodology, the paper presents anapproach for developing a visualisation tool that will help patients better understand their position andpriority in the queue and the expected waiting time, while acknowledging the work of the healthcare staff.Furthermore, the approach for developing effective visualisation techniques for data processed by anArtificial Intelligence (AI) system is also presented, with a focus on simulating already existing AIsystems. The primary goal of the study is to enhance patient enlightenment and reduce health factors inthe form of stress and anxiety, by providing patients with clear and concise information. The paperhighlights the possibilities of using engaging visualisation techniques to effectively communicate insightsand increase awareness. The results of the study are presented in the form of an artefact developed in Unity, a game engine thatenables visualisation of complex and abstract data in a concise and easy-to-comprehend manner. Theartefact uses 3D visualisations, animations, and particle effects to create an immersive and engagingexperience for patients. The conclusions drawn from the study indicate several positive outcomes. Thisimproves the acknowledgement of the overall flow and efficiency of the ED. Finally, the use of simulatedhistorical and anonymised data in the study ensures that ethical considerations are addressed, as patientprivacy is safeguarded. This approach allows for the exploration of data without compromising patientconfidentiality.
