Abstract [en]

Numerous studies have shown that short stories in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language)context have a profound effect on the development of students’ reading comprehension, aswell as being an innovative literary source to motivate students in their learning process.Short stories are a compact source of authentic material which allows students to engagethemselves to a great extent with different reading strategies and thereby familiarizethemselves with the target language. Considering the various advantages of utilizing shortstories in the EFL classroom, the present study investigates how Swedish upper secondaryEnglish teachers in Sweden use short stories to develop reading comprehension. To do so,semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 participants. The findings indicate thatshort stories are considered an effective tool for developing reading comprehension. However, an issue regarding an increase in amount of work both for teachers and students isalso indicated. Further, motivation and the interpretation of the curriculum is indicated tohave a significant role in the process of using short stories for reading comprehensiondevelopment.
