Abstract [en]
This bachelor thesis analyses teaching materials on source-critical approaches (sökkritik) to the information retrieval process in digital media. Previous studies show that teaching a critical source approach to information search processes in digital media is lacking or not adapted to the information society (Carlsson & Sundin, 2018; Skolinspektionen, 2018). A risk with this is that students will have difficulties in acting democratically if they do not understand the opportunities, risks and biases of the digital information society. Source-critical approaches to the information retrieval process in digital media is an essential skill for democratic citizens.
This study investigates whether textbooks in social sciences provide teaching content on search criticism. This was done by analysing six textbooks’ search criticism content using Saussure's language theory. The result shows that the concepts of search criticism, algorithms and filter bubble are lacking, do not have a detailed explanation or are not related to search criticism as an activity. The analysis shows that there is no common language system on search criticism in the textbooks and the concepts receive no linguistic value for search criticism, and therefore of limited use in teaching search criticism. According to Saussure's language theory, a common language system where the concepts have a linguistic value is a prerequisite for manifesting langue to an act. Hence, it may be difficult for teachers to teach search criticism using only existing textbooks.
