Syftet med denna studie har varit att undersöka bildlärarens funktion på gymnasiet, samt hur rektorer på gymnasieskolan och verksamma inom bildlärarutbildningar i Sverige betraktar detta uppdrag. Detta med anledning av reformen Gymnasie 11 (Gy11) där estetisk verksamhet är borttagen som ett obligatoriskt och gymnasiegemensamt ämne. Inledningsvis ges en kort hänvisning till ett politiskt beslut om avveckling av estetisk verksamhet. Därefter följer litteraturöversikt med tidigare forskning. Inom detta kapitel diskuteras begreppet estetik vilken förankras i vad estetik kan innebära; som metod, lärande, kunskap och estetisk verksamhet. Utifrån ett sociokulturellt perspektiv skildras estetikens betydelse och skolutveckling som rör estetikens förhållande till skolans bildningsuppdrag, formuleras i stort från Antiken till idag. Studien genomfördes huvudsakligen genom åtta kvalitativa intervjuer såväl som en kvantitativ ansats i form av enkäter. Bearbetningen av materialet och analysprocessen har genom ett hermeneutiskt perspektiv skapat grunden för vårt resultat. Resultatet kopplas därför till både tolkning och teori. Resultatet visar att bildlärarens kompetenser spelar en viktig roll i kontexten. Tillika finns en oro inför framtiden och det tycks finnas en okunskap om de estetiska ämnens positiva betydelse för lärande i skolpolitiska diskussioner.

The aim of this study was to examine and analyse the art teachers profession in high school. Also how principals at secondary schools, lecturers, heads of departments and professors in art teacher collage in Sweden considers this assignments after the reform Gy 11. Particularly in consideration of Artistic activities are removed as an obligatory and secondary shared subject. Initially, a brief reference to a political decision on the decommissioning of Artistic activities. This is followed by literature review of previous research. In this chapter we discuss the concepts of aesthetics which explains what aesthetics can mean; as a method, learning, knowledge and as an artistic activitiy. By a sociocultural perspective an aesthetic significance is described to society today, for the school and the art teacher's role in high school. The study was conducted mainly through the eight qualitative interviews with professionals lecturers, professors and heads of departments in the art teachers education. The study's survey also includes a quantitative approach in the form of questionnaires in which high school principals respond to current work situation and the art teacher´s function in this context. Working of the material and the analysis process by a hermeneutic perspective created the basis for our results. The result is therefore connected to both interpretation and theory. The result shows that the art teacher´s qualification play an important role in this context. Art teacher's function, role and mission described by informants through both the actual mission and the profession's expertise. The results also showed a concern for the future and it seems to be a lack of knowledge about the aesthetic substances beneficial role of learning in political discussions.
