Abstract [sv]

I studien medverkade totalt 164 elever i årskurs nio.

Abstract [en]

The aim with the study was to examine which motivation factors that influence students in class nine to participate actively and not to participate actively in physical education (P.E). Moreover, there was interest of examining how the P.E teachers motivate their students so that they participate in the sport education. The study had its theoretical starting point in Vallerand’s motivation model (Vallerand & Ratelle, 2004), but also other relevant research within the area has been of importance for the theory that the results in the study have been linked to. The choice of method was that we used the interviews of six P.E teachers and with those interview results as ground we formulated a questionnaire to students in class nine on three different schools concerning their motivation factors to participating actively and not to participate actively in physical education. 164 students in class nine participated in the study altogether. The results showed that there were several factors that influence students in class nine and their active participation in physical education. These factors have an impact both on the students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The main motivation factors for the reason that students participate in physical education was to be the grades and that physical education is experienced as an enjoyable schoolsubject. The students that did not participate actively have a type of motivation called amotivation, which means a deficiency in motivation. The results also showed that the students partly motivate themselves, but also that they become motivated because of other persons in their environment, specifically by encouraging and positive feedback. Our conclusion was that there is an amount of different factors that motivate students in class nine to participate in physical education, and also that the P.E teacher has an important role in motivating the students to an active participation in physical education.
