Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Aim: To study the educational situation during the preclinical work in endodontics that made the students feel well prepared for patient treatment using a qualitative method. Material: Five students from the dentistry programme at Malmö University that earlier had stated in a survey that they felt well prepared for the clinical work with patient treatments after they had completed the preclinical training. Method: Five interviews were carried out with the opening question “Tell us about the educational situations in the preclinical work that helped you feel prepared for the clinical work with patients” that the informants were asked to speak freely about. The interviews were later analysed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: Two categories were identified. The first was Variation in pedagogics with the subcategories Interaction of theory and practice and Stimulation of reflection. The second category was The individual development of competence with the subcategories Increasing difficulty and Establishing knowledge. Conclusion: The situations during the preclinical work in endodontics that the students felt prepared them well enough for patient treatment is characterized by an educational environment with interaction of theory and practice and encouragement for reflection as well as an increasing difficulty so that the knowledge finally can be established in the clinical situation.
