Abstract [sv]

Studiepopulationen delades in efter tillhörande fakultet.

Abstract [en]

Abstract Background: X-ray is one of the most important diagnostic tools within odontology. A radiological examination should only be carried out if it is likely that such investigation will provide more information and improve the treatment and/or prognosis. The dental schools in Scandinavia have similar curricula, although some differences exist, for example the disposition of courses and different learning methods. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare curricula within Oral and Maxillofacial radiology at four different dental schools in Scandinavia, to see whether students theoretical and clinical knowledge differ. Method: In March 2017, a cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the knowledge and proficiency within Oral and Maxillofacial radiology, among graduating dental students in Scandinavia. The final-year students conducted a questionnaire in their native language. Results: Response frequency; 130 out of 246 students replied (53%) and 128 students met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study. The greatest difference between the schools was the diverse result of indications to take a periapical radiograph, where the Swedish dental students were more restrictive performing a full-mouth radiography. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in knowledge regarding radiation protection, nor in x-ray image interpretation between the schools. Regardless of an exclusive course in anatomy or not, only a small difference in correct answers was found when identifying anatomical structures in a panorama. No conclusions can be drawn regarding how the distribution of courses in Oral and Maxillofacial radiology affects the students’ theoretical and clinical knowledge.
