About the project
As energy demand is rising and energy resources diminishing, sustainability and energy conservation are becoming major global concerns. Within the worldwide perspective of energy efficiency, it is important to highlight that buildings are responsible for 40% of total European energy consumption, contributing 36% to greenhouse gas emissions. In the year 2011, energy consumption in the residential and services sectors reached 144 TWh or 38% of Sweden’s total energy consumption. Since buildings are large contributors to greenhouse gasses, it is crucial to develop solutions for energy-efficient buildings that include the principal stakeholders, humans, and their interactions with the environment of the system to achieve sustainability goals in the development of cities.
This project aims to develop a connected energy solution that optimizes energy consumption by incorporating intelligent monitoring and control of distributed energy storage-based decision-making processes. This project's scope is in line with the national policies of Sweden, which aim to promote the sustainability-driven development of cities. Moreover, the research addresses three of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: sustainable cities and communities, sustainable consumption and production patterns and innovation and infrastructure.
At the university level, there is a possibility of integrating the research within undergraduate, master's and doctoral studies to broaden students’ knowledge. At the industry level, engineers in electric utility companies and companies that provide smart building and sustainability solutions can use the methods and software tools developed in this project.
