Abstract [en]

Growing evidence suggests that young migrants are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence. As young migrants often lack family and social networks, professionals are often the recipients of disclosures of sexual violence. This study aimed to explore how professionals experience young migrants' disclosures of sexual violence. A qualitative design was used, based on 14 semi-structured interviews with a range of professionals from the public sector and civil society in southern Sweden. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The overarching theme developed was 'coming across the hidden problem of sexual violence in an excluded population' supported by three sub-themes: 'linking structural marginalisation and vulnerability to sexual violence'; 'realising that sexual violence is one among many other concerns'; and 'taking pride in backing up young people betrayed by society'. Professionals expressed a strong sense of responsibility due to the complex vulnerabilities of young migrants and their lack of access to services. This, coupled with the lack of clarity about how to respond to disclosures of sexual violence, can lead to moral distress. There is a need to strengthen support for professionals, including recognition of ethical dilemmas and the establishment of formal connections between organisations making access more straightforward and predictable.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background

Previous research has shown that migrants in Sweden are disadvantaged in terms of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). SRHR policies might play a crucial role in shaping migrants’ SRHR outcomes. The purpose of the study was to critically examine: a) how migrants were represented in the discourses embedded within Swedish SRHR-related policies, and b) how migrants’ SRHR-related issues were framed and addressed within these discourses.

Methods

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) was used to analyze a total of 54 policy documents. Following Jäger’s approach to CDA, discourse strands and entanglements between different discourse strands were examined.

Results

Our findings consisted of three discourse strands: 1) “Emphasizing vulnerability”, 2) “Constructing otherness”, and 3) “Prioritizing the structural level or the individual level?”.

Migrants’ representation in Swedish SRHR-related policies is often associated with the concept of vulnerability, a concept that can hold negative connotations such as reinforcing social control, stigma, and disempowerment. Alongside the discourse of vulnerability, the discourse of otherness appears when framing migrants’ SRHR in relation to what is defined as honor-related violence and oppression. Furthermore, migrant SRHR issues are occasionally conceptualized as structural issues, as suggested by the human rights-based approach embraced by Swedish SRHR-related policies. Relevant structural factors, namely migration laws and regulations, are omitted when addressing, for example, human trafficking and HIV/AIDS.

Conclusions

We conclude that the dominant discourses favor depictions of migrants as vulnerable and as the Other. Moreover, despite the prevailing human rights-based discourse, structural factors are not always considered when framing and addressing migrants’ SRHR issues. This paper calls for a critical analysis of the concept of vulnerability in relation to migrants’ SRHR. It also highlights the importance of avoiding othering and paying attention to the structural factors when addressing migrants’ SRHR.

Abstract [en]

This chapter presents reflections and elaborations on the responsibility of, and the action needed by, the nations in the Global North for a just climate transition, exemplified with Sweden. The aim is to position social work as an academic discipline and a field of practice directed towards an equitable and sustainable society in which human needs are met in ways that are compatible with planetary boundaries. The chapter draws on secondary sources of an approach with different designations and highlights the critical, holistic, and normative potential under the overarching term,‘green social work’. The chapter discusses how the concept ‘environment’ is understood within social work and how a more encompassing meaning has been acquired due to an encounter with the environmental movement. It discusses the concept ‘sustainable welfare’ and touches on concepts such as a steady-state economy and de-growth economy leading to the classical questions within social work concerning a fair distribution of resources between people. Finally, it gives examples from Sweden of eco-social interventions that consider both the ecological and the social, striving for justice for both humans and the environment involving, for example, community workshops, urban gardening, and sharing and circular economy. We argue that even if the ecological significance might be proportionally small such initiatives should not be underestimated given that private consumption in a country like Sweden accounts for as much as 60% of the consumption-based emissions and that everyday practices can be a leverage for a sustainability transition. Eco-social interventions can also contribute to increased local social sustainability, cohesion and increase people’s connection to a specific place that is central for social mobilization and for preventive social work.

Abstract [en]

Since July 1st, 2020, honour is viewed as an aggravating circumstance in criminal cases in Sweden, and it is suggested that honour related violence and oppression should become a criminal offence in its own right. Interventions directed towards victims of honour crimes have been implemented, but fewer have targeted the offenders. The purpose of this article is to mirror the Swedish legal and discursive framework against the perspective of the perpetrators. While we discuss findings with relevance for practitioners, particularly in the light of recent legislative changes, our main focus is set on subjective understandings of honour crimes. In particular, questions about the perpetrators’ norms and worldviews, their perceptions of the concept of honour, and their experiences of the Swedish justice system are investigated. Using court verdicts and deep interviews, we highlight important themes under the following four headlines: (1) Collectivism, norms, and traditions, (2) Complexities of honour crimes, (3) Marginalization, social vulnerability, and stereotyping, and (4) Reflections in retrospect.

This article gives insight into some of the complexities that courts will have to handle given the recent and pending changes in Swedish legislation and provides knowledge that can be implemented in social and legal work to combat honour related violence and oppression.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In many families with a migration background, conflicts arise that can be linked to changing norms in migration processes. These norms and generational conflicts within families are often discussed under the term “honor-related violence and oppression”. The article seeks to provide a basic understanding of the mechanisms behind such conflicts, based on the author’s previous research and other current research on the topic. Differences in norms can be seen in the World Value Survey, where Nordic countries appear as the most secular, liberal, and individualistic. This can be compared to other countries from where immigrants moved from, where the norms are more traditional, religious, and collective. The violent family conflicts we have seen in the Nordic countries have been discussed in a simplified way in terms of gender and culture. The article seeks to provide in-depth knowledge of family conflicts that can be understood in terms of kinship-organized collective societies, where shame and honor play a major role for social status, security, and well-being in the group. Complex relationships within the family can be understood in the-oretical terms from the perspective of endogamy and patriarchal connectivity, where the relationship between mother, son and daughter-in-law, and between brother and sister, are particularly important for understanding the conflicts. Both men and women can be victims and perpetrators of honor-related violence, where the collective is of great impor-tance for the practice of violence. Violence should be understood from an intersectional perspective where gender, ethnicity, religion, class, and age play a major role. However, it is not only the violence that should be noticed, but the everyday oppression that young people experience as they socialize into traditional gender roles to become “marriageable” within the group. Family therapists are well suited to be able to help families in their role as outsiders, where a proposal is to mediate between the different family members to expose the norm conflicts and find a solution.
